Spigen makes a pretty great phone case but the way they name their models can be a bit confusing. In this article we’ll compare Spigen Tough Armor vs Rugged Armor vs. Slim Armor.
If you’re running short on time and just want to know which we prefer, we recommend you get the Spigen Tough Armor.
To me Rugged sounds the strongest and most durable. Unfortunately in testing that’s not the model we found to be the best quality for the money.
We compared the three cases using the Samsung Galaxy Note 8.

We reviewed the Galaxy Note 8 models but these cases are also available for other phones.
It’s always nice when your phone case actually looks decent considering it’s carrying a piece of electronics that set you back about a thousand dollars. All three of Spigen’s offerings are attractive but they definitely have their differences.
Spigen Slim Armor
The Slim armor sounds like it’d be the thinnest and lightest of the three based on the name. It is definitely thin and doesn’t feel bulky when you carry it in your pocket. You can also get this model with a card storage slot in the back.
Unfortunately, that’s both a Pro and Con as a lot of users had a problem getting their phone to charge wirelessly when there were cards in the card slot.
Durability of the Spigen Slim Armor
The Slim Armor has a hard outer shell. It’s been drop tested at 46 inches for 26 consecutive times. (Did they just keep dropping it until it finally broke on drop 27?)
The soft TPU inner layer is flexible and easy to apply. The rigid polycarbonate goes on after, so you don’t have to worry about flexing your phone into an overly rigid case.
Overall the design is nice, the corners are rubberized but still look sleek. The camera cutout on the back fits nicely and there were no problems with button function or camera obstruction. The Slim Armor is available in 5 colors. Check out gunmetal, it’s a cool and fairly unique grey.
Spigen Tough Armor
This case looks sleek and stylish. Doesn’t have any added bulkiness for a card slot and features a soft TPU body and additional polycarbonate hard outer shell. I do like the added kickstand. Its small and doesn’t add any additional weight. It’s also really handy.
I’m just not really a fan of two piece cases. Dust and lint buildup is already a problem with any phone case.
Durability of the Spigen Tough Armor
A second shell just means more nooks and crannies to get dust and lint stuck. If you’re really hard on your phone and need the added protection of the hard shell then I’m glad it’s available for you. For me, I prefer a less bulky case. That being said, the dual case design is rugged and will protect your phone.
Maybe I am just not as hard on my phone as some, but I prefer a single piece soft flexible case. Which brings us to the Spigen Rugged Armor.
Spigen Rugged Armor
Now we come to my favorite. It’s simple, looks great and provides me all the protection I need. The Spigen Rugged armor has a carbon fiber accent in an otherwise matte finish. It’s soft enough that I feel like my phone is protected from a drop on a hard surface.
This case has the same soft TPU as the previous two cases but does not have a rigid outer shell.
I want my phone to be as slim and light as possible (but also protected). The Rugged Armor meets both needs.
Durability of the Spigen Rugged Armor
In my daily life all I really need is a TPU soft case. You’ll have to decide for yourself if you need a rigid outer layer. The hard shell really protects well against puncture or drops on uneven objects.
The Rugged Armor stood up to the same rigorous testing as the previous models, 46 inch drops 26 consecutive times. I drop my phone pretty regularly, but usually in my house or at the office. If you work a job in a more hazardous environment than I do or if you’re hard on phones this might not be the case for you.
However, if you just need an attractive and durable case that will protect your phone from the occasional accidental drop around the house this great looking case may be perfect for you.
That’s our comparison of the Spigen Tough Armor vs Rugged Armor vs Slim Armor. I hope you found what you were looking for and check back at thebestphonecases.com for more phone accessory reviews.
